Delta eco-demonstration zone created

2019-11-02

A Yangtze River Delta Ecology and Greenery Integration Demonstration Zone was unveiled on Friday afternoon by governments of Shanghai, and Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.

A regional council and an executive committee of the zone were also established. The members of the regional council come from a variety of departments and authorities and the executive deputy heads of the two provinces and city will serve as the president of the council in turns. The executive committee of 35 is responsible for planning, reform and major projects.

The zone covers about 2,300 square kilometers in Wujiang District in Suzhou, Jiashan County in Jiaxing and Shanghai's Qingpu District.

Five towns were selected as the starter area, including Qingpu's Jinze and Zhujiajiao. Four are national-level historical and cultural towns. Besides convenient transportation, water and greenery occupy some 70 percent of the whole zone.

During a ceremony in Qingpu, Ma Chunlei, director of the executive committee and director of Yangtze River Delta Regional Cooperation Office, said the committee will work to solve the conflict between ecology and an innovative economy, turning ecological advantages to economic advantages.

"We'll strive to create a new cross-administrative-region, with balanced ecological civilization and economic development," Ma said.

Li Qiang, Party secretary of Shanghai, said Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai will work together on institutional innovation. The three areas should develop resource-saving and eco-friendly industries.

In a speech at the opening ceremony of the first China International Import Expo last year, President Xi Jinping said development of the Yangtze River Delta region would be a national strategy.
