The 83rd IEC General Meeting Opens in Shanghai

On Oct. 21, the 83rd IEC General Meeting opened in Shanghai. Founded in 1906, IEC is an organization that sets international standards in the electrical and electronic fields. IEC General Meeting is the highest-level meeting of the organization. The 83rd IEC General Meeting was held in Shanghai from Oct. 14 to Oct. 25 with the theme of “Better Quality, Better Life”. More than 3,800 experts from more than 100 countries were invited to attend the meeting in China. Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the meeting.

Xi Jinping points out

At present, green, low-carbon and circular development has become the common goal of mankind. For deep integrated development of new technologies such as AI, big data and 5G with new energy power generation and electric vehicles, there is an urgent need to formulate and apply relevant international standards and strengthen international cooperation in the field of standards

Xi Jinping emphasizes:

China attaches great importance to standardization. We actively promote the application of international standards, to support high-tech innovation with high standards, facilitate high-level opening-up and lead high-quality development. China will continue to actively support and participate in international standardization. We are ready to work with other countries to constantly improve the system and governance of international standards, so as to give better play to the role of standards in international trade and global governance.

Li Qiang, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of Shanghai Municipal Committee, attended and addressed the opening ceremony. State Councilor Wang Yong read the letter of congratulation and made a speech. Xiao Yaqing, Director General of the State Administration for Market Regulation hosted the opening ceremony. Ying Yong, Deputy Secretary of Shanghai Municipal Committee and Mayor of Shanghai, attended the opening ceremony.

Taking hosting this meeting as an opportunity, Shanghai will accelerate the establishment of a standard internationalization mechanism, vigorously promote international exchanges and cooperation in the field of standards, to constantly improve the level of standard internationalization.

Shanghai will implement the standardization strategy in depth, improve the system of high-level standards, deepen the reform of standardization, and raise the level of internationalization of standards, so as to provide strong support for comprehensively improving the quality of economic development and the quality of people's lives.

During his stay in Shanghai, Wang Yong visited State Grid’s 500KV Jing’an Transformer Substation, Shanghai Electrical Apparatus Research Institute (Group) Co., Ltd. and INESA(Group) Co., Ltd., to investigate their standardization and quality improvement.
