Students explore botanical garden at night

2019-07-08

About 80 students from four schools in Xuhui District attended a night tour at the Shanghai Botanical Garden on Sunday to explore the secrets of nature.

They observed different species of plants and the night movements of animals such as hedgehogs, frogs and fireflies.

They also attended lectures on plants and insects.

"It is magic to see some animals are still active at night instead of dead silence when night falls," said Gu Yilei, a 12-year-old student of Shanghai Fenyang Middle School. "The fireflies are impressive and beautiful.

"I learnt about insect behavior and will try my best to protect the environment."

Wu Youyou, another student, added: "I am excited to see so many different species of insects. Some of them don't fear humans."

About 20 night tours will be organized at the botanical garden this summer.
