Yihong Theater, Shanghai’s first professional theater named after a theater artist, has launched its 2019 season.

Located in Baoshan District's Wisdom Bay, it opened last year as a showcase for Peking Opera.

Celebrated Peking Opera performer Shi Yihong said the theater will be a platform for both representative and new works. It will also exhibit many other forms of traditional theater in the future.

On Sundays from June 2 to 30, six classic plays will start the season, and there will be around 70 performances throughout the year.

The June performances will be classic works by veteran artists of different vocal styles, including Xue Yaping, Kang Wansheng and Du Zhenjie. Some haven’t performed in Shanghai for a decade.

Among the shows are “Chisang Town,” a story about ancient Chinese government officer Bao Zheng, light-hearted romance “The Dragon Teased by the Phoenix,” and “Silang Visits His Mother,” adapted from a famous story of “The Yang Warrior Family.”
