City to host World Dog Show

2019-03-22

In a first for China, the FCI World Dog Show will be hosted in Shanghai from April 30 to May 3.

The Fédération Cynologique Internationale, also known as the World Canine Organization, was established in 1911 with the goal of promoting and protecting purebred dogs.

As FCI’s only partner in China, China Kennel Union beat Spain, Germany and Croatia in 2015 and won the right to host the World Dog Show Shanghai 2019.

Themed “Respect Life, Love World,”  Shanghai 2019 will take place alongside the eighth Shanghai International Pet Expo.

Xie Dianqi, general secretary of CKU, noted that China has a rapidly expanding pet industry, and the canine sector is the largest.

The majority of spending is from owners who have purebred dogs.

“China has a large population with a market of huge potential,” said Xie.

“Hosting the World Dog Show will also give us an opportunity to promote domestic Chinese breeds on the global stage.”

Shanghai 2019 will also focus on the development of animal welfare in China.

“We are looking to push forward animal protection legislation as well as establishing the right values for companion animals in China,” said Shen Ruihong, general secretary of China Small Animal Protection Association.

The World Dog Show is nicknamed the “Canine Olympics” as it’s the only professional canine competition and event that receives entries by country and region.

The Shanghai event will also feature a wide range of activities, including the third CKU Dog Handler Competition and CKU 2019 Groomer of the Year Challenge Competition.

The event will be held from April 30 to May 3 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center in the Pudong New Area.
