Get your hands on all the latest tech

2018-12-10

The city’s first popular science park opened in Baoshan District this weekend.

Parents and children can enjoy lectures and get hands-on experience of technology like 3D printing and VR, as well as trying out various innovative scientific products.

The park in Wisdom Bay Scientific Innovation Zone has a cluster of sci-tech companies, a museum and cinema, and will host science fairs.

The site was originally the warehouses of a textile mill, so visitors can find many huge, colorful containers and industrial facilities renovated into offices and education venues, a surprisingly harmonious environment combining the artistic “container culture” with science.

Visitors can wander through the China 3D Printing Museum and make a sculpture of themselves. In the Star Track VR/AR House, they can play the latest VR games — like using a light saber to cut beat boxes in the game Beat Saber.

They can also watch educational shows in the theaters or take a walk on a 3D printed concrete bridge.

At science fairs, they can buy science-related products and crafts or play some challlenging Lego games.

“The idea of building such a science park is perfect,” said Wu Qiang, head of the Baoshan District Teenager Youth Activity Center.

According to Wu, the park was never an issue only about the efforts of the government, but the participation of enterprises and the public.

According to Gan Pin, deputy director of Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, by 2020, there will be five such parks in the city.

“I hope by that time the convergence with our enterprises will be more mature,” said Gan.

“And the public will have be filled with enthusisadm for these kinds of parks.”
