River walkways upgraded for tourists and citizens

2018-10-31

Volunteers recite poems at the Xuhui riverside area on Tuesday to encourage visitors and citizens to obey the civilization rule jointly by Xuhui, Hongkou, Huangpu and Yangpu districts as well as Pudong New Area.

FLYING kites and fishing will be banned from Shanghai’s newly opened Huangpu River waterfront paths as part of efforts to improve their allure.

The walking, running and cycling paths will also be separated by barriers to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclist. Specialized sections will be set up for skating, dancing and walking pets.

Xuhui, Hongkou, Huangpu and Yangpu districts as well as Pudong New Area jointly released the regulations for the 45 kilometer downtown sections of the Huangpu riverside areas which have been opened to public.

The regulations will help develop the downtown waterfront into a new landmark to lure tourists and citizens, especially during the upcoming China international Import Expo.

The regulations were released during a ceremony at Tank Shanghai, an art park in Xuhui developed around five huge oil tanks built by China National Aviation Fuel along the river around 1910.

The ceremony also listed the downtown waterfront region as the city’s “civilization demonstration belts”.

“The city’s Huangpu riverside region will become a new window to showcase the urban spirit of Shanghai and display the urban image,” said Pan Min, head of the Shanghai office of the Spiritual Civilization Steering Committee.

Musicians perform at the Xuhui riverside region on Tuesday for visitors.

To achieve the goal, a riverside volunteer team will be organized along with volunteer stations to offer consultations and other services to visitors.

They will also act against uncivilized behavior.

Many cultural events will be held along the waterfront to entertain the public.

The city government has opened up 45 kilometers of waterfront between the Yangpu and Xupu bridges.

The project has been compared to the Left Bank in Paris or the Thames walkway in London. It is part of the city’s aim to become an “excellent global city” by 2035.

Riverfront walkways and greenbelts feature walking, running and cycling paths, flanked by historical monuments and popular scenic views running through Yangpu, Hongkou, Huangpu and Xuhui districts as well as the Pudong New Area.

An additional 5.5 kilometers of the riverside will be further opened up by 2020.

The Tank Shanghai park covering 60,000 square meters will open to public soon. It features indoor space of 10,000 square meters, a public square, gardens and green space with the four smaller tanks and one giant one as reminders of times gone by.
