Bomb dogs\' new leash on life

The four retirees prepare to depart for their new homes with their new owners at the Shanghai World Financial Center yesterday.

Dollar can’t bear to be parted from his handler and embraces him for one last time.

Four bomb detection dogs retired from the Shanghai World Financial Center yesterday.

Two female springer spaniels, 11-year-old Monica and 8-year-old Xiaomi, and two male golden retrievers, 9-year-old Pike and Dollar have worked at the skyscraper for more than six years.

But they don’t just look for bombs. Over years, they have detected large amounts of fireworks, lethal knives and other banned items.

Yesterday, the four doggy heroes were honored with prizes for their years of keeping the building safe.

Monica has been working in the building for seven years, but has been a detector for much longer. As an elite dog, she was picked to ensure safety during the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 Shanghai Expo.

Pike shakes hands with his trainer.

Pike was a naughty puppy in a police dog research center in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province. It is his eighth year working in the building and he has matured to become model of good canine behavior.

Since its opening in 2008, the building has been staffed with sniffer dogs and accepts applications to adopt retired dogs from the public.

From today, the four will enjoy retirement at new homes with their adopters.

Dollar was adopted by Huang, who works in the building.

“I saw him on duty every day and I made up my mind that I had to offer him a happy life after he retired,” she said. “I hope I have less overtime and can accompany him on more walks.”

Adopters are required to be aged over 25, have previous experience with dogs and stay in Shanghai or nearby Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.
