Autonomous bus wows WAIC

2018-09-19

Apollo, an autonomous shuttle bus, carries WAIC participants at an event on Changyang Campus in Yangpu.

An artificial intelligence experience center was unveiled in Yangpu District yesterday, giving the public a chance to see cutting-edge AI technology at firsthand.

The district government and Baidu worked together on the center at Changyang Campus, a downtown innovation focal point in a renovated textile factory.

“The innovation center will bring together enterprises and researchers creating a valuable location for AI development in the city and country,” Vice Mayor Shi Guanghui told a forum in Yangpu, part of the ongoing World Artificial Intelligence Conference.

An unmanned shuttle bus known as Apollo is carrying guests around the conference venue.

The public will be able to take the bus when they visit the center after it opens before the end of the year.

Apollo can take six passengers and can avoid obstacles and is aware of pedestrians and other vehicles.

Facial recognition, robot receptionists, intelligent data collection and smart home appliances will be displayed in the center.

“We have developed two new unmanned vehicles — a bus and a cargo transporter,” Baidu’s Wang Liang told the forum.

The Changyang innovation park is home to over 150 startups and some 18,000 entrepreneurs.
